50th Anniversary of The Selkirk Bridge Club

The Selkirk Duplicate Bridge Club was founded in 1972 by Shelley and Don Lugtig, Ruth and Frank Hooker, Hiltrud and Al Wehrle, June and Roy Gilbart, Gerry Johannson, and Jean Davis. Later, Gord Walterson and Harold Johnson provided leadership. Today we have about 75 members coming from all areas of the province and even as far away as Ireland. Members join us from Selkirk, Gimli, Winnipeg, Pinawa, Beausejour, Lac du Bonnet, Stonewall, Winnipeg Beach, Teulon, Pine Falls, & Belair. The club has played at various locations in Selkirk until finding its home at the Gordon Howard Centre. We are very grateful to them for these past many years. They have been very gracious and accommodating to us. Due to Covid, we did not play from March of 2020 until September of that year……but only for a brief 2-week period. After that, again due to Covid, we were on a yearlong sabbatical until September 2021. Covid once more raised its ugly head, and interrupted our game in December of last year, but we have been playing since March of this year, and fingers crossed we will continue without further interruption. Our membership has decreased over the past 2 years again due to the pandemic along with aging players, but we are hoping our remaining absent members shall return as we look forward to more stable times. We also hope to gain new members in the future. At present Ruth Hooker and Hiltrud Wehrle are the only 2 remaining founding members. Ruth has not yet returned to the Club, but Hiltrud has played several games. Ruth and Ken Hardy were long time managers of the club until June of 2019. Sadly, Ken passed away in early 2020 followed by June Gilbart and later Roy Gilbart and then Al Wehrle in the fall of 2021. Our Club is not sanctioned, but ACBL (American Contract Bridge League) rulings are followed. We are a non-profit, independent Club, operated and staffed by volunteers. Reg Johnson, has been our Director for the past 20+ years. Linda Homenick and Gary Kirkpatrick are current Managers. Linda Morrision is our Secretary/ Treasurer and Pat Johnson is Refreshment Coordinator. Mike Rutherford is our Volunteer “at large’ and is a master of all trades. We are known as ‘the friendly club’, and are always welcoming to new members …. We play Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1:00 year round except when Gordon Howard Centre is closed. We will be celebrating our 50th year at the end of June at the Gordon Howard Centre, with a wine and cheese event during our afternoon game, followed by a dinner in the evening. Anyone interested in playing with us, please contact Linda Homenick at rolinhome@mymts.net or Gary Kirkpatrick at gtkirkpatrick@shaw.ca
